Core documents for each partner

Every couple needs, for each partner: a government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence), a separate date-of-birth proof (10th certificate, birth certificate or passport), and a current address proof. These three are the backbone of the file.

Photographs and witnesses

Bring recent passport-size photographs of both partners. You will also need witnesses carrying their own original photo ID on the appointment day — arrange them in advance so nobody is missing at the last moment.

Special situations

If either partner was married before, you must add the divorce decree or the former spouse's death certificate to prove you are free to marry. NRI and foreign-national cases add a passport, visa and a single-status or no-impediment document, and sometimes attestation.

The consistency rule

This is the single most important point: your name and date of birth must read identically across every document. A date of birth that says one year on the Aadhaar and another on the marksheet is the most common reason a file is held up — and it is entirely avoidable when caught early.

Jurisdiction and address proof

Your address proof also decides which office has jurisdiction. An address tied to the wrong district sends you to the wrong office and wastes a day. We check this before booking anything.
